Eduardo
Castillejos farms 200 acres with his father, Gonzalo Castillejos, his
mother and his two sisters. G.E.M.A.A. is an acronym for Gonzalo
(Eduardo's father), Eduardo, Miryan (his sister), Alina (another sister)
and Angeles (his mother). Eduardo's wife, Maria Magdalena, has a
deep respect for nature and wilderness and retired from the Reserva
Biosphera El Triunfo, a wilderness reserve, in the state of Chiapas.
Five years ago, she suggested to Eduardo that the family convert their
mango grove to organics. Eduardo was open to the idea but lacked the
confidence that their family could gain the knowledge to convert the
family orchard to organic production methods and have a model that was
economically sustainable.
Eduardo went to school with Robert Rendon, Hector Rendon’s brother (our
pineapple grower based in Oaxaca). Robert Rendon has a PhD in Agronomy
and is employed by the United Nations to foster profitable and
sustainable food production in Mexico. Roberto provide the inspiration
and much of the knowledge for the Castillejos family’s successful
conversion to Certified Organic production. They have 100 hectors of
Ataulfo Mangos and 70 hectors of Tommy Atkin Mangos. They are also
farming 15 hectors of Kent Mangos that were planted two years ago that
will have fruit in two years.
New Harvest Organics is very proud of the close working relationship
with the Castillejos family. We enthusiastically embrace the opportunity
to ship the family’s fruit through out North America. This February will
commence our fourth season with the Castillejos Family. Eduardo’s
obsession is to ship the most beautiful organic mango pack possible. He
is currently studying advanced pruning and cultivation techniques in
Ecuador and Brazil enabling him to substantially increase the colors on
his fruit. The result is a sensational presentation in the cartons and
on the retail shelf. New Harvest Organics will continue to support the
Castillejos Family’s outstanding production.
